Jake (Gilligan)

Gilligan as his new owner takes him home.

Gilligan’s story is quite interesting.  In June of 2002, I received correspondence, via e-mail, from a volunteer worker in the Alamogordo, NM shelter.  This shelter is a high kill shelter.  Three days and then they begin calling people who might have been interested in adopting the dog.  You have 30 minutes to respond to the call and then the shelter calls the next person on the list.  When the list is exhausted and no one has claimed the animal, it is euthanized.  By the time I learned of Gilligan, he had about 36 hours left.  The volunteer at the shelter was involved with dobie rescue and understood the distances involved in getting to him.  Alamogordo is several hours from Amarillo.  She offered to pull the dog for me and neuter him and give him his shots.  Dr. Gutierrez, a mobile vet, was working temporarily in Alamogordo and lived in Roswell.  He volunteered to get Gilligan from Alamogordo to Roswell for me over the weekend.  I drove to pick him up.  He was such sweetheart, and a very typical vizsla with a Velcro personality.  Unfortunately, he attached to Burnie.  He and Taz did not get along well and he was fostered by Patrick Gill and made great friends with Redman.  Penny was also in our home at the time, smelling quite nice I might add.  Gee, what boys won’t do to impress the girls!

Gilligan has been renamed Jake and now lives in Midland/Odessa, Texas with Kayln and Angela Perkins.   He also has a Vizsla friend.  Incidently, he and his new friend get along fabulously.  I guess it really was competition over the “nice smelling”, wonderfully beautiful, Penny.
