Redman

Redman, better known as “Houdini Dog”

Redman and Patrick – seems Redman choose Patrick to be his very own!

Redman came to us from a shelter in Roswell, New Mexico.  We don't know anything about his past, but he came to us full of whipworm and a horrible upper respiratory illness.  Redman is a big boy, weighing 53 pounds when we picked him up.  However, he looked like a refugee from a concentration camp.  This dog was the most talented dog I had ever had in my home.  He could open crates and human doors within minutes.  The first morning, I crated him away from my own dogs in the garage until we could determine if his illness was contagious.  He managed to open the crate, open the human door between the garage and the house and find me in my office.  I took him to the vet and he removed the metal plate from the kennel and ran up and down the dog run saying hi to all his new friends.  He is absolutely a social butterfly, never meets a stranger, and loves both dogs and people.  Redman came to work with us, since he couldn't be trusted alone, and attached himself to one of my employees.  Patrick could not move without the big red dog following him everywhere.  He would sometimes fall to sleep standing or sitting, afraid that Patrick would leave without him.  Patrick had applied to be a foster home for rescued vizslas and asked if he could foster this one for me.  Sensing that it would be more than "just another vizsla" I agreed with the understanding that we needed to get him healthy before a permanent placement could be made.   Although the upper respiratory illness has been a challenge, Patrick and his wife, Faye, applied to adopt him, even after he ate the gear shift and turn signal in Patrick's new pickup.  They live on 23 acres, and his escapes come less frequently as we get smarter, he gets more exercise, and his very high social needs are met.  And, he gets to hang with the other "red kids" at the gun shop.
