1. Obtain the postcard from the local Texas Department of Public Safety (I-27 and Georgia in Amarillo) to request a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) application packet from Austin. You may also print the request card here. You may also visit Texas Online to obtain a packet and use your credit card to pay for the CHL License.

NOTE: Most instructors for the Texas CHL have packets available for the class. Having the packet PRIOR to taking the class is no longer required UNLESS you are renewing an existing license.

2. A mandatory CHL class is required. It is state mandated to be 10 hours or longer. Classes are held at Panhandle Gunslingers on a regular basis. Check with us concerning dates and time. Just email charli@panhandlegunslingers.com or call 806-373-7572 for more information.

3. Bring with you to the class a black pen, your packet (if you have received it from the State), firearm, ammunition, hearing and eye protection, and your Texas issued picture identification (Driver's License or equivalent). Firearms and safety equipment can be rented at PHGS. We also sell ammunition, safety equipment and firearms!!

4. Cost for the class is $110 for new licenses and $75 for renewals. State fees are $140 for a new license and $70 for renewal. There is an additional $5 due and payable during the course to the instructor for the CHL Certificate fee. A senior citizen (and other special circumstances) discount is available for new licenses. The packet will have these special circumstances listed in it for your convenience.

5. It takes Texas a minimum of 45 days and most usually 60 to process the CHL. It can, unusually, take up to 180 days.

6. If you need basic handgun education (this class assumes basic knowledge), we will gladly set up an appointment for individually private instruction. Private instruction basic instruction is $30.00 per hour.

Our instructor is Jim Finley from Claude, Texas. Most classes are held on Friday night and Saturday. You may split the class into two sessions by attending Friday night and Saturday afternoon - or do an "all day" class on Saturday. The State has furnished our instructor, Jim Finley, with new packets for those taking our class. You may read more about the Texas Concealed Handgun Regulations on their website. Renewal classes are 4 hours and held on Friday night or Saturday morning usually. If these times do not meet with your schedule, please contact us as we will try and work out a time frame with you.

Remember that if you qualify with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver. Qualification with a semi-auto affords you the opportunity to carry either a revolver or semi-auto. If you do not have a semi-auto, Panhandle Gunslingers will gladly provide you with one for a nominal fee plus ammunition costs (provided you take the class here, of course).

Panhandle Gunslingers will gladly take your check, credit card, cash, etc. for payment of the class. The State now will accept all forms of payment including personal checks. Credit cards must be used at http://www.texasonline.com to pay the State of Texas.

There is no "temporary license" available from the State to enable you to conceal carry while processing your application. WAIT until you receive your license before carrying your firearm.
