The history of the Vizsla

The Vizsla, or Hungarian Pointer, is thought to be one of the oldest sporting breeds, possibly over 1000 years old. A hunter and companion to the Magyar (Hungarian) people, the name (Vizsla) means alert and responsive. They can be trained to be excellent hunters, have a "good nose" and are wonderful, energetic companions by nature.
In Hungary, for many centuries, the Magyar aristocracy prized the Vizsla for its hunting ability, regal appearance and warm personality. Acquaintance with the Vizsla is to understand it's winning traits. It is a very friendly, affectionate, loyal dog. Vizslas make wonderful pets and hunting dogs, but prefer to be treated like a member of the family. They should sleep indoors (they prefer the bed), close to their people, and most are lap dogs (males weighing 55-65 pounds and females 45-55 pounds). Be forewarned!!! They are sensitive and should not be severely disciplined. Encouragement and a reward system work best to train this breed. They can become quite destructive if not given the love and devotion they deserve from the humans in their lives. Be prepared! The Vizsla is a very demanding breed. Most prefer to view themselves as the very center of their humans' lives. (That's right, you don't own a V - in their perception, they own you.)
The Vizsla almost became extinct between WWI and WWII during the Russian occupation of Hungary. Hungarians who fled the Russian occupation in 1945 smuggled this beloved breed out of the country. The Vizsla first appeared in the United States in the early 1950's and was admitted to AKC registry in 1960.

Vizslas have beautiful, soft, rust-colored coats that require very little maintenance. Although shorthaired, they do shed somewhat, but are clean and have very little odor. Our Vizslas accompany us everywhere. They work at the gun shop (our discount store "greeters") and sleep on our bed (when we let them). They also participate in many dog activities such as hunting, showing, agility and obedience. In general, we just have fun together!!
Taz and Stormy come from Nebraska. Heidi is from Littlerock, Arkansas. They hunt, they greet our customers, and they are family members. Come in and meet them anytime you are in Amarillo, Texas at Panhandle Gunslingers, 710 S. Georgia, Amarillo, Texas.
We also have endeavored to dig up some historical
accounts of the Hungarian Maygar Vizslas. See one of the articles here:
